The XenServer installation supports a large variety of RAID controllers, which are listed in the XenSource HCL. The SATA and SAS RAID controllers have become more popular nowadays, but some of them are not a real hardware RAID controller. These types of RAID controllers use the BIOS-level software RAID functionality, and are called FAKERAID. These FAKERAID controllers don't have any on-chip RAID logic and use the resources of the host CPU for computing RAID logic (hence they are also knows as HOSTRAID controllers).

Installation of a XenServer Host is not supported on servers using FAKERAID controllers. Some of the most commonly-used FAKERAID controllers are:

    Adaptec HostRAID ASR
    Highpoint HPT37X
    Highpoint HPT45X
    Intel Software RAID(ICH5/6/7)
    JMicron JMB36x
    LSI Logic MegaRAID SATA 150-2
    NVidia NForce, MCP Series
    Promise FastTrack SATA 150, SX4,SX8,TX2300/2200,TX4300/4200
    Silicon Image Medley 3112
    SNIA DDF1
    VIA Software RAID

Though XenServer Host installation is not supported on these controllers, you can create a Storage Repository on the RAID array created by a  FAKERAID controller. Read this KB how-to article which shows an implementation of a Storage Repository over FAKERAID using dmraid.

Note:
Some of these SATA/SAS controllers might be found in XenServer's HCL, but it does not mean that these SATA/SAS RAID cards are supported for XenServer Host installation. The SATA controller chip does not provide any information about the actual RAID logic used, hence the connected hard disks work as an individual disks. Please confirm with the controller manufacturer whether or not a particular model of their card provides true hardware RAID logic.
