SummaryThis article describes how to use PlateSpin PowerConvert to convert a physical instance of a Windows installation to a VM for running under XenServer v4. A free trial of PlateSpin PowerConvert is offered for XenServer and XenEnterprise users on the PlateSpin website at http://www.platespin.com/xsfreetrial/. Note that you will need to enter a valid product code from your XenServer or XenEnterprise license key. The easiest way to get the Product Code is to use XenCenter to open a console to the XenServer machine and enter the command xe host-license-view. Then you can copy the productcode value and past it to the PlateSpin web form. PrerequisitesThis article assumes that you have installed PlateSpin PowerConvert on a server on your network, that you have one or more XenServer v4 machines on your network, and that you are using XenCenter to administer the XenServer v4 machines.
You will also need to download this patch file (in .zip archive form) to the server where you have installed PlateSpin PowerConvert. Note: Currently block-level replication is not supported. Please note that this patch supports the following transfer methods only: - Live File Transfer
- Take Control Transfer
Procedure - Extract the contents of the zip archive, 1.package, to a temporary folder on your PowerConvert Server (for example, c:\temp).
- Browse to X:\Program Files\PlateSpin PowerConvert Server\Packages\ 483eb955-94ac-45fd-baf3-b0813ce227bc\ (where X is the drive you installed PowerConvert to) and rename the existing 1.package file to 1.old.
- Copy the new 1.package file from the temporary directory to X:\Program Files\PlateSpin PowerConvert Server\Packages\483eb955-94ac-45fd-baf3-b0813ce227bc\
- Browse to X:\Program Files\PlateSpin PowerConvert Server\Controller\Packages\ and delete the folder 0 and its subdirectories.
- In XenCenter, select New VM to start the New VM wizard. Select the appropriate Windows template and click Next.
- Boot the target VM with the PlateSpin PowerConvert Take Control ISO or physical CD.
- Configure a "physical-to-physical" conversion to this target VM (note that a Universal Edition license is required for this functionality)
